Biography

Using graphite pencil on heavy black paper, Michael Edward Voss creates abstract drawings with skewed perspective in series. Utilizing recycled material to capture an initial 2” by 3” idea, each series builds upon the common inspiration with each iteration growing in detail, complexity and size.

A self-taught artist, Voss's career began with his acceptance into the 2008 Cuneo Gardens Art Fest as well as two other local juried art shows. Voss's background is steeped in mathematics, and his artwork shows his passion for both architecture and computational complexity. His influences include Van Gogh, Klimt, Monet, Homer and Escher.

Based out of Chicago IL, USA, Michael Voss was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs. He is also the bass player and lead singer of Craven Dogs, an all-original three piece indie rock band.

Artist Statement
I am inspired by the reflective property of graphite on black paper. When lit properly, the graphite transforms from dark to silver with a hammered, polished metallic finish. I strive to create strong impressions within my audience. I love to experiment with perspective, so much so that a patron at my first show experienced intense vertigo and was forced to avert her eyes from my work.

To maximize freedom for viewer interpretation, I title my work with numbers rather than names, with alphabetic suffixes for each in a series. I find balance, precision and closure within the rigors of this process. – Michael Edward Voss
